Woman Dies After Surgical Booking Error

A woman has died from kidney cancer after medical staff incorrectly marked her surgical procedure as “semi-urgent” rather than urgent. As a result, the woman waited 78 days for the surgery. By the time, she had the surgery performed it was too late because the cancer had spread to other parts of her body.

The patient was diagnosed with kidney cancer in July, 2012 after presenting symptoms for over a year, and was meant to be booked into urgent surgery to have a cancerous kidney removed as part of her treatment.
This communication failure as well as the lack of any proper or diligent follow-up led to her death.
